Plastic Pollution Explanation Writing

Did you know that it takes some plastic over 400 years to break down? Some of that plastic is slowly breaking down in our oceans, on land, and even in the stomachs of birds, fish, and sea animals. Plastic is made from natural materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil. Plastic pollution is a big problem, and is killing the planet, and the creatures on it.

Firstly, microbeads. Microbeads are tiny bits of plastics that can be found in some products such as toothpaste, facial scrubs, hand sanitiser and more. But microbeads are not good for our oceans, Microbeads could leach toxic chemicals to any animal that consumes it. Microbeads are banned in some countries like Canada, USA, Sweden, France, UK, Scotland, Netherlands, Wales, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Australia.

Next, small packaging. lots of small packaging, and bits of plastic are found in animals (fish, birds, sea animals and more.) to solve this problem, we could buy things in bulk. By buying (foods, drinks, and more) in bulk, you don’t have lots of small packaging, but bigger containers and cardboard packaging that contains more, and isn’t small enough to fit in a sea turtle stomach. Things like single serving yogurts, or travel sized toiletries, could change into bigger containers of yogurt, and bigger tubes of toothpaste, soaps, and more toiletries.

A lot of plastic can be found holding your food, and maybe around the house. Plastic is a part of our daily lives, and it’s getting worse for the environment. We could reduce our use of plastic by (at the supermarket,) using reusable bags instead of plastic bags (which are banned in NZ), and (anywhere,) using metal water bottles instead of plastic water bottles, and maybe when you eat out, or even at home, instead of using plastic straws and cooking, and eating utensils, use metal, glass, or just reusable straws and cooking and eating utensils.

In conclusion, plastic is a problem on our planet, it can be found in lots of different things, including packaging, as microbeads in products. The microbeads in some products can lead to the ocean, and into fish, which people eat. But there are ways to replace it, for example, using mesh/reusable bags to carry our vegetables at the supermarket, or reuse packaging. You could reuse packaging for things like art, or to fix something. It’s much better in your house as art, then in a seagull's stomach. Remember the five R’s, reduce, reuse, recycle, re purpose, and refuse.

NZSL Week Writing T3W10

New Zealand Sign Language is one of the official languages of New Zealand. This week, for New

Zealand Language week, (and for literacy,) we are learning about this language, and thinking more

about why this is unique.

NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) is the 12th most frequently used language out of approximately

190 languages (that’s quite a lot.) in New Zealand according to a census in 2006. In 1880 New

Zealand Sign Language (or NZSL,) sign language in schools for the Deaf was banned. It became an

official language of New Zealand in April 2006. NZSL is not just fingerspelling, and there are

different easy to say different things.

It’s a combination of hand shapes, body movements, and facial expression. It even has a whole week

based on it, (this week.) NZSL is unique to NZ because It started, and is used in NZ. Also, it is a

natural language of the NZ deaf community, just like how Samoa, Tonga, and China have their own

languages, we have our three official languages (English, Te Reo, NZSL.) It was also developed, and

is native in New Zealand, and is special because it includes terms/expressions of Maori. NZSL is now

used everyday by different users, and in the NZ deaf community.

For New Zealand Sign Language this week (and for literacy this week,) we had to write a writing about NZSL, why it is important/unique to New Zealand, and how it was developed in New Zealand. This is a presentation with planning on it.

Task Description:
This task was about finding information and facts about one of the 'heros' of the protests in New Zealand. As you maybe be able to see, I chose Kate Sheppard. Here, you see a picture of Kate Sheppard, and some facts/information about her around the otsides of the picture of her.

Black Lives Matter Writing

   Black Lives Matter Writing:

If you didn’t know, right now, there are lots of people protesting (mostly in America,) to
get the message black lives matter. Why, you ask? Well, there were already protests, and
judgements about it before, but it got worse when a person called George Floyd passed
away. Again, how do you ask? He passed away because he was killed by four cops. I
know, that sucks, and that also created more and more protests, and warnings all over
the world, and social media.

I see lots of people fighting in their own way around the world on social media. Including
a teacher in auckland. She posted a video on instagram of her teaching her class of 6
year olds about racism. It was a very cool video to watch, and it was also quite inspiring.
In the video, the teacher seemed very calm, and it was pretty obvious that she knew her
class, and what to say.

I wonder what the next step is, or when they will finally listen. You shouldn’t judge
someone, or talk about them just because of the color of their skin. I know a movie
called T.H.U.G (The hate you give). It’s pretty similar to what’s going on right now.
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds -- the garden heights
neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she
attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she
witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend (Khalil) at the hands of a police
officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community. In the movie, we also find out
that she also witnessed her other friends pass away (Natasha), when someone shot at
her. Starr must find her voice and decide to stand up for what's right.

In the movie, Starr says “how many of us have to die before y'all get it?!” This line was
a quickly said line, but a sentence to make you think (or maybe just the police.) I recently
rewatched this movie, and it is just one of those movies to make you cry. I see a lot of
people protesting these days, even kids! We also have protests here in New Zealand. In
NZ, people are fighting against racism too, because some people just don’t understand.

Overall I know lots of people that have opinions about this, and all of them said (not exactly but,) what happened is unacceptable, and especially during the effect right now of the virus. From what I know, the cops had absolutely no reason whatsoever to do what they did. Those cops should go to jail, I agree that black lives matter. Every life matters. Whether the color of your skin is dark, light, brown. Whether you live in a rich neighborhood or not. You matter. Every life matters. I also think that, at the end of the day, everyone is human, and we all have the same color blood, so no one should be having to fight for justice. What do you think?

This task included watching a video, and answering questions. This is a video of Joshua Iosefa saying his prefects speech from when he was at Mt Roskill Grammar. His speech is called 'brown brother.' It shows in this presentation what I thought this video was about.
